We have one more ask of you, it is not for money, it is for words - expressions of solidarity. Please take five minutes to let our friends in Nepal know that we haven’t forgotten them.
Whenever and wherever a major disaster strikes, the world’s media descend to document the aftermath. It was no different last month when the collapse of a glacier near the Nepal-Tibet border caused a catastrophic flood that has killed a confirmed 1,450 people. 6,000+ people are still missing, the final death toll will be huge, some estimates put it at 10,000 people.
We must remember too that thousands of wild and domestic animals have also been lost. This is what climate change is doing, it is incredibly unjust, Nepal has done so little to cause this crisis, but is being hit by it with devastating force. The damage is enormous.
The world’s media has now moved on, the calls for us to appear on TV news shows have dried up. Nepal is now at the beginning of what will be a gruelling marathon of recovery.
This moment, when the media attention has died down, and the road ahead looks very long and very difficult, is an incredibly daunting one for the people of Nepal. They face the huge task of building back, and doing so in more climate resilient way. It will be all too easy for them to feel alone in this task, forgotten by the rest of the world whose attention has moved on to the next ‘story’. We want to do what we can to ensure they know they are not forgotten.
As supporters of The Glacier Trust you have already given so much, our Crowdfunder raised a total of £33,320. It is a staggering amount, and way beyond our initial expectations. Thank you. We do, however, have one more ask…
Over the next ten days, we want to collect as many messages of support and solidarity for the people of Nepal as we can. We will get these messages translated and delivered, by our NGO partners, to the communities they are supporting. We will also post these messages via our social media channels in English and Nepali where our many Nepalese followers will see them.
So, we are asking you to please take a few minutes out from your day to write a message that reminds those who have survived this tragedy that they are not forgotten, and that we stand with them in the struggle for climate justice.
