Climate Adaptation: A Pathway To Community Resilience

Title: Climate Adaptation: A Pathway To Community Resilience

Join a discussion on climate change adaptation with:

Ed Carr: Lead author on the IPCC's adaptation report climate-resilient development pathways.

Morgan Phillips: UK Co-Director of The Glacier Trust, and author of Great Adaptations; In the Shadow Of A Climate Crisis

Olivia Carpenter-Lomax: Zero Carbon Guildford trustee & Chair of The Energy Sector Executive at Institute Of Engineering & Technology

Our current trajectory is leading us toward 3-4°C warming above pre-industrial levels, a path that would be catastrophic for the majority of life on earth. Whether we can limit this warming to the IPCC's 'safe' limit of 1.5°C is the subject of some debate, but there's indications that we may have already passed 9 of 14 crucial climate tipping points.

Many of us don't want to give up the hope that mitigation measures can still limit global heating, but given global governments' slow and ineffective responses to the climate crisis it's now urgent that we begin designing and implementing adaptational strategies that can help us cope with a rapidly changing planet.

We need to begin intensive work on building resilience and developing strategies that help us cope with extreme heat, frequent flooding & intense weather events, buckling train tracks and failing infrastructure, and the real possibility of collapsing global food supply chains.

So what do we mean by 'adaptation'?

Join our panel for an online discussion on how the IPCC defines adaptation, how that compares to how people on the front line of the climate crisis are implementing adaptational strategies, why traditional forms of 'shallow' or incremental adaptation are no longer viable or effective solutions to tackling an escalating climate crisis, and the key role of 'transformational adaptation' in helping us cope with a changing planet whilst improving our connections with each other, with nature, and helping to build the cohesion and resilience necessary to cope with resource scarcity.

SoGES seminar - University of Southampton

Title: Great Adaptations - In the shadow of a climate crisis
Dr. Morgan Phillips -
Co-Director The Glacier Trust
Drawing on his work with The Glacier Trust in Nepal, Morgan will discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly of climate change adaptation. Expect to hear about adaptation in the Himalayas, but also on the streets of Paris, the football stadiums of Qatar, and the vineyards of southern Europe. But expect too to hear Morgan's thoughts on what might happen if the climate change crisis accelerates beyond the 2C threshold. Is it time to take Deep Adaptation and Transformative Adaptation seriously, and do we need to get better at critiquing the reassuring stories being told about climate change and where it is headed?

Title: Geographies of (Group) Homes
Dr Andrew Power –
Population, Health and Wellbeing, School of Geography & Environmental Science
Group Homes are a form of ‘community care’, that accommodate between four and six people, where extensive or pervasive paid staff support is provided to the residents. They represent a significant part of the care home market and are the dominant form of residential accommodation for people with severe learning or profound intellectual disabilities. Despite looking no different to other houses in the street, there is variation in quality with many institutional practices remaining across the sector (Svanelov, 2019) and some contend that such places ‘could never be a home’ (Groger, 1995). In response, our study seeks to understand how people living in group homes can be helped to 'feel at home'. Drawing on social geography literature, the seminar explores the question of what it means to 'feel at home', and whether this can be accommodated within this type of care setting. The insights reveal a more profound question of whether people can truly feel at home in any home where care takes place.

Great Adaptations - how are we going to adapt to the climate crisis - ONLINE

Global Footsteps is pleased to present Dr. Morgan Phillips, co-director of The Glacier Trust and Former Global Footsteps coordinator for this online talk. Morgan will draw on his work in Nepal to discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly of climate change adaptation.

Morgan's book 'Great Adaptations' is out now, and can be bought here.

When you register for this event on Eventbrite, you will be sent the zoom link by email.

The event is free to attend, but donations are welcome, which will be shared between the The Glacier Trust and Global Footsteps. Donate here.

Book launch - Bristol - IN PERSON

Join us at Waterstones Bristol - Galleries as we celebrate the launch of Great Adaptations, it’s sister publication Climate Adaptation, and our beer collaboration with Wiper and True.

The event will feature speeches from two Climate Adaptations authors and Morgan Phillips, TGT’s Co-Director and author of Great Adaptations.

The evening will entail a discussion about both new titles, the topics covered and the themes that derive from them. We won't be shying away from the climate conversation and we invite you not to either.

With atmospheric CO2 at unprecedented levels and insufficient action being taken to prevent a rise in temperatures above 2 degrees centigrade, we are not just looking at significant disruption but the possibility of societal collapse.

For the first time ever, the magnitude of this challenge is faced head on, with avenues to truly address it presented. Case studies and models from 16 authors around the world show ways that we can build adaptation and resilience, as well as what ‘zero emissions’ really mean.

You will get a chance to hear from Climate Adaptation contributors and Morgan Phillips, author of Great Adaptations and contributor to Climate Adaptation.

Guildford Great Big Green Week - Online

Join Dr Morgan Phillips, UK Co-Director of The Glacier Trust, for a discussion on his book Great Adaptations - a book that has been called 'a wake-up call' and a 'twin wind of reality and hope'.

In it, Morgan highlights the need not just for climate mitigation, but also adaptation - re-shaping our lives, economies and societies to handle the changes to our climate already 'locked in'. He will talk for around 30mins, with time for questions afterwards.
