The Guardian are publishing a series editorial articles this week looking ahead to the themes of 2026. Their Boxing Day piece focuses on adaptation and quotes our recent co-authored We Need To Talk About Adaptation report:
"A recent report from the UK’s Glacier Trust and Climate Majority Project argued that charities and politicians should seek to change this, and promote an “action-oriented public understanding of climate risk”. All must recognise that adaptation cannot simply be left to market forces because the economics of climate risk make private finance retreat just as danger rises."
Although we would all, of course, prefer climate change not to be in the news at all - in the sense that we wish it was happening - but given that it is, adaptation needs to be covered prominently. This article indicates the Guardian's intention to report on adaptation more in 2026.
This is encouraging, as were the findings of our report which showed a marked increase in the coverage the UK's leading environmental organisations are giving to adaptation.
The Guardian's editorial ends by asking a key question: "how do vulnerable nations survive a warming world that emissions cuts alone can’t stop?" After nearly two decades of enabling climate change adaptation in the remote mountain communities of Nepal, we can offer some of the answers to this question. But we are keen to learn more so hope to see a flood of inspiring stories in 2026.
